The normal length of stay is two days unless that individual is involved in our alcohol program. That program is usually a year to complete. We feed those who come to our doors. That is done by supplying a hot meal to a weary traveler, or by supplying food boxes to the needy families in our area. Not only are they fed physically, but also they are fed spiritually. We currently have Bible studies six days of the week (Monday through Saturday, and a Pot Luck Dinner on Friday night at His Haven downtown). Presently we have different people coming in on each day of the week. Chuck visits the men in Curry County Jail while Debbie the director of His Haven of Hope visits the women each Tuesday. Then there are those impromptu counseling sessions that occur on a daily basis at the cash registers.
Our main area of financial support has been coming in from sales in our thrift store. Cash donations are increasing, but for the moment thrift store sales are usually higher. This is another area that we hope to change in the future.
There are the occasional community service jobs that are done. Recently one of our program staff members helped one such person by repairing the plumbing in her motor home. One of the elderly ladies in the neighborhood was having trouble getting out of her RV. Another one of our staff members along with two of our transient population installed a new deck with stairs this lady could get up and down on. Sometime back there was this couple that had a son in a wheelchair. They didn’t have a lot of money, and needed a deck with a ramp, so that he could access the trailer they were living in. One of our other staff members built that deck and ramp.
We do the best we can at supplying those who are hungry, homeless, and in need as best we can. James 2:14-16 reads “What use is it, my brethren, if a man says he has faith, but he has no works? Can that faith save him? If a brother or sister is without clothing and in need of daily food, and one of them says to you, ‘Go in peace, be warmed and be filled’, and yet you do not give them what is necessary for their body, what use is that? Even so faith, if it has no works, is dead, being by itself.” |
